Warning! This Area is Resting is a temporary installation that restricts access to a small part of the urban environment to allow it to rest. Visitors will be granted access only on the condition that they do not perform any work, move or speak within the area.
Within the framework of the Everything We Do festival, the installation explores the boundary between action and inaction, work and rest, presence and absence. It proposes a hypothetical scenario in which even the city itself can be conceived as a body in need of recovery and rest emerges not as the absence of action, but as a conscious refusal of its uninterrupted continuity.
Silvia Cherneva works as a freelance artist in the fields of contemporary dance and performance, physical installations and documentary cinema. She considers shared attention, presence and play to be a form of activism; in her work she seeks to create conditions for these to happen, especially within the context of the contemporary urban environment.
Her projects include Unstable Ground – an alternative play terrain for children and adults, a performance stage and a platform for lectures and discussions; Critical Mass – an aerial dance performance that allows the audience to hang and swing; the documentary short films Yacht Club Swing and Michael, which use dance to explore the social situation in two peripheral neighbourhoods in London, Stone Masonry School – a documentary film about the Stone Masonry School in the village of Kunino in the Vratsa Province region; as well as the educational and artistic initiative Focus Cinema Dance, which distributes dance films across a series of small Bulgarian towns and received an award from Sofia Municipality in 2022. She is co-founder of the Room Temperature Association, which works to develop understanding and expand access to contemporary art in Bulgaria.
