About us
NINE ELEPHANTS is a festival for art in the urban environment. It brings together and presents artistic and interdisciplinary practices that map new ways of coexisting, perceiving, and narrating the city. The festival is an invitation to artists, writers, researchers, experts, and residents to share the city in a new and unconventional way.

NINE ELEPHANTS VOL. 1
The first edition of Nine Elephants Festival took place from July 11 to 21, 2024, across different neighborhoods in Sofia. Over the course of ten days, we presented 19 artistic projects, including exhibitions and audiovisual walks, performances and spontaneous urban interventions, street theatre, literature between residential blocks, as well as lectures and expert discussions focused on improving the environment in which we live.
The name “Devet Slona” (“Nine Elephants”) reflects our desire to initiate conversations around important urban topics—such as informal exchanges, spontaneous ecologies, post-socialist heritage, and personal memory—in a slightly fantastical way. It invites us to imagine art appearing unexpectedly in neighborhood streets, community centers, offices, or even in a local gym.
NINE ELEPHANTS VOL. 2
In cities around the world—including Sofia—our daily routes pass through fragmented geographies: between gated complexes and informal zones, neglected communities and speculative landscapes, between memory and forgetting, urgency and stagnation. Yet within this fractured environment, poetic, resilient, and resistant pathways continue to emerge.
The second edition of the Nine Elephants Festival took place from July 10 to 20, 2025, under the title “Fantastic Routes,” once again presenting artistic interventions and research across the city and its periphery. For the first time, we organized Sofia Performance Night, and through the symposium Imagining Cities, as well as the research program Urban Storytelling School (in collaboration with C*SPACE Berlin and Център за социална визия), the festival acquired an international dimension.
