The Line Is the Game is a short, comedy live-action role-playing game that turns the everyday frustration of waiting into something playful and a little chaotic. Get your role from the ticket machine and join the line — possibly for a bathroom, possibly for art. Complete your task and use your one-time superpower to change the line before the doors finally open. Tired of waiting? Step out, come back as someone new and see whether how you wait is a more interesting story than what you’re waiting for.

Graphic Design: Eliza Piazzi, Game Device Fabrication: Pablo San Gregorio. “The Line Is the Game” was created for No Quarter 2025 at NYU Game Center.

Jana Romanova is an artist working with games, performance and photography. Through role-playing, social games and various playful experiments, she researches liminal spaces, (in)visible systems that shape us and what agency and care might look like when we playtest other ways of living together. Her projects were exhibited at various international exhibitions and festivals such as Prospects (Rotterdam NL), A MAZE / Berlin, No Quarter by NYU Game Center (USA), V&A Museum (London, UK), Side Quest for the Real (Geneva, Switzerland), Stroom Den Haag (NL), Copenhagen PhotoFestival (Denmark), Format (Derby, UK), Chobi Mela (Dakha, Bangladesh), Cortona on the Move (Italy), Encontros da Imagem (Braga, Portugal), the Backlight Festival (Tampere, Finland), Encuentros Abietros Festival (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and many others.

She’s particularly passionate about thinking games, play, and playfulness as tools for creating meaningful connections. She designs and facilitates live-action role-playing games in physical spaces open for people with any or no experience in it as part of her art practice.

As a guest teacher, she is invited to facilitate workshops on playful approaches at The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Wageningen University, and ArtEZ in the Netherlands.

With financial support from STROOM Den Haag, National Culture Fund and Sofia Municipality – Summer Programme.
