Where
Starting point: 2B “Tsar Ivan Asen II” Street, in front of the cooperative Tsarevets

The area around “Tsar Ivan Asen Street” has hosted many intellectuals since its formation as the land there originally belonged to Sofia University and was allocated to its professors. This initially practical decision contributed to the distinctive character of the neighborhood, as this concentration of intellectuals attracted other writers and thinkers to settle in the area.
The route includes stories about the poet Severina Teneva and her son, the writer Dragan Tenev, about Yordan Yovkov, about the philosopher and diplomat Dimitar Mihalchev, as well as Boris Delchev, who also lived in the neighborhood and recounts stories about his grandfather, the literary critic Boris Delchev.

Dimitar Bozhkov is a professor of philosophy at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. He is the author of the books History and Emancipation, Clio in the Passages of Modernity and Marxism in Messianism.

The Literary Routes of Read Sofia Foundation are city walks that combine literary history, unknown facts about Bulgarian writers and poets and change the perspective of the city, observing it explicitly as a literary territory. The Literary Routes are stories told by writers and poets, theorists and literary historians. Each year the routes are new, they involve different presenters and each of them prepares an entirely authored route that directs the audience’s attention in different literary directions. In 2025, the seventh season of “Literary Routes” takes place in May, July and September with 12 new city tours.

Read Sofia Foundation was established in 2014. It strives to create a new literary experience, to make original, large-scale and interesting events in which the audience is drawn into the world of literature in an unexpected and unforgettable way. It implements various projects and initiatives that generate a dialogue between bulgarian and international authors, between “small” and “big” languages and cultures; seek the intersections between literature and other arts; provoke the rediscovery of the city through culture; create a sustainable network of professionals and organizations working in the field of literature and culture. The Foundation’s main projects are Literary Encounters, Literary Routes and Hidden Letters. Since 2024 Read Sofia has been organising the European Literature Night initiative and the Foundation’s team has been the organisational, creative and programming engine of the ABK Sofia International Literary Festival from 2013 to 2020 [excluding 2017].
