About us
NINE ELEPHANTS is a festival for art in urban space. Our goal is to bring together artistic and interdisciplinary practices that map new ways of coexisting, perceiving, and narrating the city. The festival is an invitation to artists, writers, researchers, experts, and residents to share the city in a new and extraordinary way.

NINE ELEPHANTS VOL. 1
The first edition of “Nine Elephants” took place from July 11 to 21, 2024, across various neighborhoods in Sofia. Over ten days, we presented 19 artistic projects including exhibitions and audio-visual walks, performances and temporary urban interventions, street theatre, literature between apartment blocks, as well as lectures and expert discussions focused on improving the environments we live in. “Nine Elephants” aims to develop cultural projects of high artistic value while also seeking to discover new places for art within the city.
The name “Nine Elephants” is tied to our wish to begin the conversation around topics that matter to us in a slightly fantastical way — imagining how art, like an elephant, might suddenly appear on the streets of a neighborhood, in community centers, offices, or even the local gym
“Nine Elephants” features exhibitions and audio-visual walks, performances and temporary urban interventions, street theatre, literature between apartment blocks, as well as lectures and expert discussions focused on improving the environment we live in. NINE ELEPHANTS VOL. 2
The second edition of “Nine Elephants” takes place from July 10 to 20, 2025, continuing the conversation begun between residents and artists, poets and gardeners, experts and observers. Over ten days, the festival travels to various locations across Sofia and, for the first time, goes beyond the capital — reaching nearby towns and villages where cinema, poetry, and performance meet new audiences.
Under the theme “Fantastic Routes,” the second edition offers walks, interventions, exhibitions, and performances that explore new ways of thinking about urban space. For the first time, “Nine Elephants” also takes on an international dimension through the Urban Storytelling School and the two-day symposium Imagining Cities (July 18–19), which brings together more than 20 participants from different countries to exchange ideas, visions, and artistic practices.
The second edition of “Nine Elephants” builds upon the concept of the first, expanding its focus on urban space and the dialogue between different communities. The festival presents walks, performances, site-specific interventions, theatrical and literary events, as well as meetings with artists and experts who offer new perspectives for thinking about and reimagining the contemporary environment.
